About

Note to Sophia,

This blog contains pictures, videos, and commentary on almost everything you have done in your life. We wanted to record it somewhat for us but also for you. If you ever wonder what you were like when you were 1 or 5 years old, you can turn here for some idea.

Fortunately for you, you were the first child we had. The first child gets loads more attention and videos and photos and everything than the second because for a while you are the only child around and you are new and exciting.

Unfortunately for you technology moves fast in this world and when you were born things like digital cameras and video cameras were somewhat nascent. So the quality of the earliest stuff is going to be lacking. The earliest videos of you look terrible yet were shot on a $1,000 "standard definition" video camera. By the time you read this you'll have to ask me what "standard definition" means. Today as I write this in January 2011 my $500 "point and shoot" camera takes videos an order of magnitude better than that old video camera. And today in January 2019 my iPhone can take slo-mo videos that blow all of that earlier stuff away.

Also unfortunately for you Mommy and Daddy had primal video and video editing skills and only okay photography skills. Some of the raw video is almost unbearable to watch with jerky camera action, incessant zooming, and so forth. The editing wasn't much better until about 2010 and I started focusing on improving my skills. It was much easier to take photographs and that's what we did. You have tons of those. Much more than your brother. As a result, before 2010, most of the video was taken in huge chunks since it was recorded on tapes (I'll have to explain that too). So while you have some easy to watch short videos, the early stuff is at times monolithic. For example a video such as "2006-06-June to September" is a collection of videos captured from June to September.

Most videos are named in the format "Year-Month-Title" so you know when it is from. The photos are named more generically. Most of the video and photographs should have meta-data to verify the date it was taken and perhaps have some geo-data as well.

Most of the video is hosted at Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/daddy). There are some videos on that site that are not posted on your blog (primarily old ones from 2005-2007). I moved over to YouTube in 2017 but I haven't changed the pointers in this blog so you'll see a lot of blank videos. Go to YouTube to find them. Also there are some videos of your brother that aren't posted to your blog. Also there are some duplicate videos on that site. Well almost duplicate; they are slightly different in some cases. Very old movies are also stored on Google's video site (http://www.google.com/video/upload/Status?rf=1&hl=en). Some raw video footage was edited using Movie Maker on Windows and some was edited using iMovie on Mac OSX and some was done on both. The pictures are hosted by Google and Blogger.  And all the movies ever taken should be recorded into a spreadsheet somewhere.  Hopefully it is here - Public Excel File of Movies.

Presumably we also have local copies of the videos and photos and most likely in higher resolution. Hopefully by the time you read this all of this can be placed in the "cloud".

Hopefully you won't find anything too embarrassing here. I'm jealous. I don't have nearly as much of my life documented as you do.

If at any point you want to delete the blog I would advise against it. Rather, you should make it private.

Daddy
