Xmas & NYE

We had quite a busy holiday season. So busy that I decided to bag making any videos. There just wasn't enough time. I had spent most of the previous 2 months simply getting the house ready for our guests - new sidetables, linens, towels, chairs, etc. Many visits to Ikea.

The festivities started just before Christmas. Grandpa (you know call him Uncle Grandpa), Auntie Caroline, Jonathan, and James flew in and stayed with us for about 5 days. We did lots of things.

We woke up on Christmas and opened presents. Neither of you received any big main present but you got lots of stuff. You got lots of cool books and a electric blanket and some arts & crafts toys. Caden basically got Lego including a video game which is all he has done since Xmas. Mommy got some photo books.

Then the hard work started. I had to cook for 8 people. We had kubocha pumpkin soup with brown sage butter, a bleu pomegranate and roasted pear salad, a standing aged prime rib roast (7 ribs!) served with horseradish (the hardcore stuff) and horseradish cream (the rookie stuff), brussel sprouts with lardons and balsamic vinegar, vertical potatoes au gratin (I layered them vertically instead of flat), a corn, bacon, green onion side dish. For dessert I wanted to make something that granny used to make for grandpa so I made bread pudding with custard. It wasn't quite right but I think I've figured out how to make it properly based on this one. It was still pretty yummy.

The rest of the week we did a lot of things. We went on a cheesy Home's of the Stars tour (Caden's comment was "That was terrible!"), hiked in Malibu by Pirate's Cove, had dinner at Mozza (yum), and drove down to Venice Beach. And lounged around quite a bit. I think everyone had fun and it would be nice to have them back next year.

Everyone left just before New Year's Eve. We went to a friends house in Palm Springs. It's a cool house. It was owned by Bill Lear the inventor of the Lear jet and the 8-track-tape. It was very mid-century modern.

We only spent one day there and then headed up to Mammoth to go skiing. The snow wasn't great but it was a lot warmer than last year.

When we finally got home everyone was kind of glad. We were all pretty tired.
