Whistler Wedding

Yesterday we drove from Seattle to Whistler - we left at 9:30AM and arrived at 2:30PM. It was an easy drive without any traffic or snow - just one detour in Vancouver because the Lions Gate Bridge was closed due to trees blocking the roads. Luckily we decided to drive on Friday morning because the night before there was a major storm in the Pacific Northwest, and it took some people over 15 hours to drive up to Whistler. Some of our friends had to sleep in the car because they got stuck on the highway - how miserable! In fact, the winds were so strong in Seattle that the Microsoft campus was shut down on Friday because there was no power.

Luckily we picked up a mini-van from Avis so after your nap, you watched DVDs in the backseat with Daddy. We stopped in Squamish for a snack for Daddy and then 45 minutes later we arrived at the Four Seasons Whistler.

After we checked into the hotel and dropped off our bags, we went to the ski rental shop in the Four Seasons. The hotel also has a ski concierge where they deliver your boots/skis to the base on the mountain so guests don't have to lug their gear around. What a great idea! We are spoiled now - we normally stay at a condo while in Whistler but now we must go back to the Four Seasons.

Next we took a short walk around the Upper Village. It was a bit icy on the sidewalks after the big storm. Daddy was surprised that the snow was not all cleaned up like they would have done at Disneyland - I reminded him that we were in Whistler, not Disneyland.

In the evening, we went to the rehearsal dinner at Trattoria del Umberto - you were still feeling quite sick so we didn't stay long. In fact, you only lasted 45 minutes so we took the shuttle back to the hotel and you slept while I finished your kid's meal (penne pasta with tomato sauce). Daddy stayed out with Ty and his friends - after dinner, they met others at the Longhorn Bar which is an apres ski place at the bottom of Whistler. Daddy had a few more beers with Ty's uncles and also tried Ty's favorite Canadian snack, poutin. You'll have to ask Daddy what it is made of, but it did not sound very appetizing to me.
The next morning, you woke up at 5AM (you're still on East Coast time) still feeling so sick. We snuggled with you in bed for an hour and then we let Daddy stay in bed while we went for a walk to buy some milk. We borrowed the stroller from the concierge and walked to the 7-11 since it was the only place open. On the way back, we also stopped into McDonald's to buy a few Egg McMuffins and Sausage McMuffins for breakfast. I had planned to drop you off at the daycare center at Blackcomb but we cancelled because you were so sick - fever, runny nose, glassy eyes and a cough too. Poor baby.

Around 8:30AM, we called our friends David and Becky Aronchick to see if they were planning to go skiing. We met them downstairs in the breakfast room - they both ordered HUGE bowls of oatmeal. After breakfast, Daddy and David took the shuttle to the ski concierge; Becky went back to bed; and I put you down for a nap. While you were sleeping, I snuck out for an hour to work out in the gym. You were still sound asleep when I returned so I enjoyed a long hot shower and read the newspaper until you woke up.

We went out to lunch with Becky at my favorite crepe place in Whistler - you still had no appetite but you enjoyed playing with a bucket of toys. Becky and I enjoyed savory crepes with pesto and mushrooms - yummy! After lunch, we walked around Whistler Village and stopped into a kids store called Please Mum. I bought a few new hats and mittens for you since Daddy complained that your others ones were too small. All of the stores had issues with customers using credit cards because of the storm - the shops had to phone-in every credit card sale to get authorization so it took forever.

Around 3PM we took the shuttle back to the hotel to see if Daddy returned from skiing. They were still cleaning our room so we waited in the lobby and you watched Dora. The concierge mentioned there was a cookie decorating class for kids in the restaurant so we walked downstairs to join in the fun. You had fun punching out the gingerbread cookies but had no patience waiting for the cookies to bake.

Instead you poked around the bowls of candy to be used for decorations and then decided to watch more Dora. You never eat candy so I think you were just curious what were in all of the bowls.

After skiing, Daddy went to the steam room since we were nowhere to be found. We just relaxed in the room until it was time for the wedding. At 5PM, your babysitter Nicole arrived - Nicole was from New Zealand and seemed very sweet. However, you knew what was going on and started to scream, cry and kick. Poor Sophia! Daddy and I finished getting ready and left the room - we could hear your crying and banging on the door handle all the way down the hallway. How sad.

We had 20 minutes to kill before the wedding ceremony, so we went to the hotel bar for a pre-wedding drink. A lot of other guests had the same idea. Daddy just brought his vodka tonic to the wedding - we bumped into Ty in the hallway who wanted a sip. Good thinking, Daddy.

The ceremony was short and simple - then we had cocktails and appetizers until dinner was served. Everyone cleaned up nicely after a day skiing! Here is a photo of the Big Sky crew - when we lived in Seattle, we used to go skiing in Big Sky with Ty every March. The last time we went David had just started dating Becky (they got married in July) and Robert Jungerhans also came. We always have a great time skiing in Big Sky! We'll have to plan another ski weekend when you are old enough to ski.

Ty and Suzanne cut their cake before dinner - we were hoping one of them would smoosh cake in each others' faces but it did not happen. It was very civilized.

Overall, Ty and Suzanne's wedding was quite tame - we enjoyed a nice dinner with David/Becky and another couple from Microsoft (Peter Han and his wife). After dinner, we danced for a few songs, chatted with a few other friends and then said goodbye because we were exhausted. I'm glad we made the effort to be at their wedding in Whistler even if I did not even ski! When we got back to the hotel room, Nicole told us you cried for 15-20 minutes and then fell asleep on the bed watching Elmo. Poor baby!

The next morning, you woke up again around 5:30AM so we brought you into bed and hoped you'd fall back asleep. After an hour of tossing and turning and then putting your fingers up our noses, in our eyes , and into our ears, we finally woke up and went downstairs for breakfast. We enjoyed a nice breakfast buffet - but you were quite cranky especially whenever I left the table. We borrowed the stroller again and walked around Whistler Village. They finally cleared the sidewalks so it was easier to walk around. We had planned to put you on skiis today, but you were still so sick. We walked to the nearest Starbucks and warmed up inside before walking through Whistler Village. You were happy to just sit in the stroller and check out all of the sites and people walking around. We watched a few dogs playing in the snow and even saw Santa riding a firetruck near the Whistler base. We took the shuttle back to the hotel and packed up all of our things. We checked out of the hotel around noon and drove to Vancouver. We were planning to have a nice dinner at our favorite restaurant in Vancouver called C. However, after we checked into the Westin in Vancouver, you were so cranky and irritable - Daddy doubted you would last even 3o minutes at a fancy restaurant so he cancelled our dinner reservation at C. Bummer!

In fact, Daddy and I bickered most of the weekend because he hates travelling these days - we walked along Robson to find a place to eat and even then we got into an argument. Daddy wanted to go to a pub and I had found a Chinese restaurant that was written up as a great cheap eats place - more than half way there, we turned around to go back to the pub only to find out kids were not allowed! Instead we had to find another place to eat - our options were limited near the hotel: Indian or Thai. Daddy picked Thai, and luckily it turned out to be quite good. You enjoyed rice noodles with chicken and veggies while we ate fish cakes, green curry and another fish dish. We were seated in a corner booth so you could make as much noise and jump around as you pleased. Though we missed out at C, it was much less stressful.

We put you to bed early and then we went to bed too. Everyone was looking forward to going back home to New York after this trip! While we waited at Vancouver Airport the next morning, you played with a family of 3 Chinese kids - you did not want to leave them. I think you want a bigger family now so that you always have someone to play with.

The flight home was uneventful - we had a row of 3 seats but I spread out to another aisle seat, so Daddy and you had even more room. When the DVD player battery died, you got bored so we walked up and down the aisles. Eventually you fell asleep in your carseat. We were happy to be back in NY but then had a nightmare time waiting for the car service - you woke up and wouldn't stop crying. Daddy sent us home first in a cab; after waiting another 10 minutes, he also jumped into a cab home. That is the last time we use Promenade car service!
