Christmas Eve on the Shore

Today we drove down to the New Jersey Shore to celebrate Christmas. We rented a beach house in Point Pleasant right on the boardwalk. This is near where our friends Ji Mi and Sandy live and where we stayed last time we visited the Shore. After we dropped off our stuff at the beach house, we drove into town to have fish & chips at Stewart’s of Kearny. After lunch, we walked around to buy another small gift for the Yankee Swap that Sandy and Thomas were throwing at their Christmas Eve dinner.

While your Daddy took a nap on the couch, we went grocery shopping to buy all of the ingredients for our Christmas dinner. Your Daddy is a good cook and is going to make us roast beef for dinner tomorrow night. We also bought some fresh squid from the local seafood store, champagne and beer, and then searched for horseradish root. We went to four markets but no one had it available (so I bought some fresh prepared horseradish as a substitute).

In the late-afternoon, we drove to Manasquan to see Ji Mi (below), Sandy, Thomas and all of their friends for a big Christmas Eve dinner. It was very festive – all of the kids were playing with their new toys that Santa had delivered.
We just missed Santa by 5 minutes when he came by on a big fire truck. Luckily Santa knew you were coming and left you a small gift – a new little pink doll.

We snacked on hors d’ouvres and played with the other kids while we waited for all of the other guests to arrive. You climbed up the stairs a few times - you know how to go up but not down yet. When you were almost at the top, you would look behind you. I'm not sure if you wanted to see your progress or if you suddenly realized how high you were.

One of the neighbors, Moo, likes to play with her mom's cell phone just like you. She was trying to take photos of you with the camera on the cell phone.

The kids (Moo, Palmer, Jake, Liam) had fun playing with Daddy like trying to pull off his Santa's hat.

There were nearly 40 people including all of the kids. Before we sat down for dinner, we watched a short video of two little boys named Jake and Liam – our Christmas present to ourselves is a new digital video camera but we don’t know what kind to buy so after the video ended, Daddy went to talk to David about his video camera. You drank another bottle on Daddy's lap and then it was time for the rest of us to eat.

For dinner, there was so much food – 3 types of salads, lasagna, baked ziti, meatballs, broccoli, sausage with peppers, chicken piccata, eggplant parmesan and a few other things. It was all very yummy. You ate some baked ziti but not much since you turned your entire plate over and all of the ziti fell on the floor. You were tired after eating dinner and fell asleep in the Baby Bjorn.

After dinner, we all gathered in the family room near the Christmas tree for dessert and the Yankee Swap. Everyone brought a gift under $10 to the party. After dinner, Moo went around with a Santa’s hat filled with numbers – and then one by one, we picked up a gift from under the tree. I picked #3 and Daddy was #28 – the higher the number the better because you could either take one of the gifts that was already opened or select a new gift from under the tree. I selected a gift bag which had a lime-green body pillow – a few people wanted to take the pillow from us but I put you to bed upstairs with the pillow. If anyone wanted to take my gift they would need to pull it out from under a sleeping baby. As you can guess we still have the pillow.

Daddy selected a box with some nice glasses, but Ji Mi took them away from Daddy so he had to select another gift and ended up with a mini-vacuum cleaner (it would have been useful to pick up cheerios and other small things off the ground or to dust around the computer, but unfortunately it did not work at all when we put in the batteries).

At 10:30, everyone started to leave so that the kids would be in bed before Santa arrived after midnight. Before we left, Ji Mi brought us a few gifts – a CD for Daddy, board books for you, stationary for Mommy to write letters, and a pink sweater and shirt for you. That was very sweet of Ji Mi to buy us so many gifts.
