Sleep training

Tonight we begin your sleep training. Up to now we have swaddled you and rocked you to sleep and sometimes employed a hair dryer. The hair dryer works well because it creates some 'white noise' which helps you not get distracted by other noises.

But tonight we have to start putting you through a painful process so you can learn how to sleep on your own. Here is how it works. Every night we follow a sequence of events. At 8:30pm mommy feeds you. This takes about 30 minutes. We burp you and keep you upright for about 10 minutes. Then I change you and put you into sleep clothes. Then I read to you for five minutes. This repetition every night will help you get into a rhythm so you know your bedtime is coming. Then we put you into your crib say good night and close the door. You naturally start screaming. After 5 minutes we are allowed to go in and talk to you for 2 minutes and then we have to leave again. Then after 10 minutes we can go in again to see you and then leave. Then after 15 minutes we can go in again. After that we can go in every 15 minutes. Eventually you will cry yourself to sleep. The next night we do the same thing but stretch it out to 20 minutes, and then 25 minutes...

Your mom has been fretting over this because it breaks her heart to hear you crying. She even thought about postponing it for another week but you'll have to go through this at some point so we might as well do it now.

So far we have gone in once after 5 minutes. You just stopped crying with little spurts of crying here and there. Here's a recording after we went in the second time. (Again the recording is gone unfortunately). You can cry loud huh?

Well 2 minutes after we left after that visit you were asleep! Your mom is in shock. Sometimes it can take 1-2 hours of crying and visiting but you fell asleep after our second visit! Way to go Sophia!

Update #1: Well you went to sleep fine that night but then got up around midnight or so. Mommy had to spend about 1 hour dropping in to see you before you went to sleep.

Update #2: Saturday went well too. You cried for 2 or 3 visits and then went to sleep for the whole night.

Update #3: Sunday you went to sleep very quickly. We didn't even get to visit you this time.
